Fastlane is the National Science Foundation's electronic proposal submission website and is the only way NSF will accept a proposal. To submit a proposal via Fastlane:

  • Register as a Fastlane Principal Investigator.

  • Notify ORSP of your intent to submit a proposal.

  • Write the proposal according to the specific program guidelines and the NSF Grant Proposal Guide (PDF) , NSF's definitive proposal preparation instructions.

  • Obtain necessary University approvals using PARS.

  • Enter proposal information and upload necessary documents to the Fastlane site

  • Notify ORSP that the proposal is ready to submit.

Instructions for submitting a Fastlane proposal from the University of Maine  Explanation of the local requirements and resources available for preparing and submitting a proposal to NSF.
Fastlane Registration Request Form - for users or Principal Investigators.  Contact Cliff Wilbur at (207) 581-1419 for urgent requests.  Online requests are normally processed within 1 to 2 business days of receipt.

NSF Grant Proposal Guide (PDF) - complete instructions for preparing a submission to the National Science Foundation.  Includes page limits, syntax, and structures for the various elements of the proposal. A must for NSF grant writers.
NSF Instructions for Preparing and Submitting a Fastlane Proposal - Includes formatting conditions and other requirements for electronically submitting a proposal, as well as "how to" information about electronic submission to NSF. Electronic proposal submission is the only way NSF will accept a request for funding.
NSF Indirect Cost Policy (PDF) - Official document containing NSF's new policies on Indirect Cost charges to research grants (pg. 82).

Click one of the links below to download the file.  If your browser uses a program or plug-in to view the file rather than prompting for a destination, use File/SaveAs from the menu bar to save it to the correct location on your local computer.  Make sure that you include the file extension (the text after the dot) when saving so that the files will behave correctly when used.
Fastlane.joboptions - configuration file for Adobe Acrobat Distiller for converting files to PDF format that is compatible with the Fastlane version.  Save this file to the Acrobat Distiller Settings file (typically c:\Program Files\Adobe\Acrobat version \ Distillr\Settings - version is 4.0 or 5.0).
Current and Pending Support Form 1239 (Word) - MS Word version of the NSF Current and Pending Support form (NSF 1239) with tabbed fields for easy data entry.  Especially handy for investigators with many sources of support to enter.
ORSP Project Budget Spreadsheet (Excel) - Excel 2000 spreadsheet developed by ORSP for constructing a proposal budget.
