800 faculty and professionals; 140 countries; 2 to 10 months; some 2002-03 awards are still open

Description:  Grantees lecture and conduct research in a wide variety of academic and professional fields.  Refer to individual award descriptions to determine that a grant is possible in your field and preferred country before applying. Previous grantees are eligible if 3 years will have elapsed between the end of previous award and start of new; not applicable if previous grant was for less than two months.

New Century Scholars

October 1

25-30 international awards; selection announced in January; program is March through November

Description:  Eminent professionals and scholars examine a theme of transnational significance and maintain contact during the program year; appointed Distinguished Leader directs a culminating plenary seminar

Seminars for International Education Administrators

2- to 3-week summer seminars; Germany-25 awards, Japan-5, Korea-4

Description: Group programs; open to full-time education administrators directly involved with international programs; PhD not required

German Studies Seminar

November 1

25 awards; 3 weeks; beginning June 2003; starts in Berlin

Description: Intensive group seminar in Germany; open to scholars in fields related to the topic or in German Studies.  [2003 Topic-Challenges in Demographics] Additional Qualifications: Ph.D. candidates who hold full-time teaching appointments and meet other requirements are eligible.

Alumni Initiatives Awards

February 15

15-20 awards for $1,000-$25,000; awards announced April-May; up to 2 years

Description:  Small institutional grants to former Fulbrighters to create sustainable, mutually beneficially institutional relationships between home and host institutions; proposal should demonstrate evidence of commitment of scholar’s home institution

Distinguished Chairs Program

May 1

39 awards available in Canada and 13 countries in Europe; award amounts, duration, and beginning dates vary

Description: Most prestigious awards in Scholar program; applicants must have prominent record of scholarly accomplishment; initially submit letter of interest and curriculum vitae; after review, short lists for each chair will submit full applications by August 2

Senior Specialists Program

Rolling

2- to 6-week consulting assignments; some Fall ’02 opportunities available

Description:  Includes travel and per diem, plus a $200/day honorarium; structured to meet the needs of foreign institutions; academic matchmaking process; online application

 

 

 

Eligible Professions:  Faculty at universities, colleges, and community colleges; administrators; business people; lawyers; artists; scientists; journalists; researchers

 

Eligibility Requirements: U.S. citizenship; Master’s, Ph.D., or equivalent professional/terminal degree in your field; for professionals and artists outside academia, recognized professional standing and substantial accomplishments; teaching experience as required by award; no felonies

 

Language Requirements:  Most lecturing awards are in English; research awards require knowledge of language as appropriate for project; Latin American countries may require Spanish or Portuguese; Francophone Africa generally requires French

 

Shannon Martin has volunteered to assist with applications.  As a recent recipient, she will be researching the use of mass communications in Bosnia-Herzegovina during the Spring of 2003.
